Think about all of the services you use where it would be unthinkable to expect something for free. You wouldn’t dream of asking a dentist to give your teeth a quick scale and polish on the house, even if the process would only take 15 minutes of their time. Neither would you pop into your local barbershop for a freebie wet shave, even if the only thing the barber is doing in that moment is sweeping his shop floor. They provide a service to make a living just as you as a coach also provide a service to make a living. So, when someone asks if they ‘can pick your brain’ they are asking for your service to some degree. How you value your own service should give you pause for thought before you impart any advice for free.

In today’s episode I want to tackle what some coaches may find an awkward situation of casual ‘brain picking,’ be that from friends or work acquaintances. I discuss the art of information exchange where you may wish to forgo a financial charge in return for gaining new helpful information from the brain picker. I reveal the ways you can impart your services broadly, to audiences or on podcasts, that while provided for free, will have a nice opportunity cost for you in the returns of interested new clients and of strengthening your credibility. I also break down the AHSTIPTO anacronym that will allow you create space in your schedule for the freebie advice seekers in a way that should be beneficial to you both.

“You shouldn't allow people to pick your brain for NO cost” – Jos Willard

“When someone asks you to ‘pick your brain’ they're really looking for a shortcut. They're looking to change the cost of the information” – Jos Willard

“People are only going to invest with you in direct proportion to the amount of trust and credibility you have earned with them” Jos Willard
