On this episode, we talk with Dr. Tyler Kallasy, PT, DPT about everything from taboo training, the role of physical therapy in performance training, similarities and delineations between different types of sports performance professionals, knees-over-toes training, and how physical therapists are uniquely trained to help athletes achieve their goals. More about Tyler:Tyler Kallasy is a graduate of Utica College, where he received a B.S. in Health Sciences and then a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree. Currently, he is a traveling DPT, allowing him to adventure across the U.S., and practice in a variety of settings.

Initially, Tyler planned to focus solely on outpatient orthopedic and athletic performance. His love for sports and recreation began as a young boy, and carried him through 4 years as a collegiate football player. During grad school, Tyler spent some time experimenting with various fitness modalities, and eventually landed himself in a CrossFit box, where his passion for improving human movement really began to thrive.  Tyler has been able to use his DPT degree in combination with his experience as a CrossFit L-1 Trainer and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist to help athletes of all ages, shapes and sizes progress toward a healthier, happier version of themselves.

Along the way, Tyler has had a few experiences that have had a significant influence on his professional goals, and potential career path. While completing a 12-week clinical rotation at an intensive care unit for patients with a variety of neurologic conditions (TBI, SCI, stroke, CP) Tyler discovered his love for neurologic rehabilitation. Throughout graduate school, Tyler worked in Adaptive Sports and Recreation – building, facilitating and developing a variety of programs for folks who are blind or visually impaired. Since then, he has focused his efforts toward learning how to better incorporate his passion for the human nervous system, with his clinical knowledge of the musculoskeletal system, and professional experience in recreational and wellness adaptation.

Tyler continues to advance his knowledge of manual medicine through courses including RockTape Functional Movement Techniques (Kinesiology Taping and IASTM Tools), Grey institute 3DMAPS Movement Analysis and Performance Systems.

While he enjoyed practicing in the standard outpatient orthopedic setting, Tyler recognized how much he enjoyed working 1-on-1 with folks in the comfort of a private setting, such as their home, or their gym. While he continues to practice in a commercial outpatient orthopedic setting, Tyler also provides exceptional physical therapy services in a non-traditional way. This has allowed him to further improve his ability to really understand the patient and provide skilled evaluations and treatments with undivided attention and guidance.

Tyler enjoys making up his own recipes, hiking mountains with his girlfriend and doggos, exploring restaurants in a new city and working out.Find Tyler on Instagram @tylerkallasy.dpt and on his website www.prospect-pt.com
