How Do You Define Going Viral?

At one point there was the Digg Effect and more recently there was the Pinterest Effect. Over time the definition of "Going Viral" has changed but the guys dig into and break out how from one industry to another things are very different. There is of course a mention of Social Meowdia - which there should be!

Overall the guys really dig into some ways to think about "going viral" and how to calculate it for your business or project. Some of the things you should think about when trying to define what "viral" is for you:

  • Lead and sales goals - i.e. Business goals

  • How big your market is?

  • How big is your current audience?

  • What is the goal of the content?

  • How many links or domains?

  • What is your outreach and promotion plan?

  • What is your social media strategy?

  • What is the story you are telling?

  • What is your budget?

The guys briefly talked about YouTube and just the huge amount of content uploaded every day/hour/minute. It really is a crazy stat if you think about it:

300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute!

Episode 53 Mentioned Personalities and Social Channels
During the show we mentioned a few Instagram and YouTube channels that have a high bar for going "viral" based on their audience. They also set the bar high and if you are comparing your 3,000 Twitter follower account to these, you will for sure be in trouble.
