Welcome to the Fan Engagement Chat, the episode of the Fan Engagement Pod where we hear about someone’s approach to Fan Engagement. This episode takes a look at the fastest risers in the Fan Engagement Index for 2019/2020, Bristol Rovers, in a chat with Commercial Director Tom Gorringe, who you can also hear in Episode 5.


He comes with a richly deserved reputation for being one of the most effective at Fan Engagement in the game. How? I think it’s that he’s got an attitude of ‘getting things done’ - tackling what you can, when you can - but of always communicating, listening and building trust. 


Credit must also be paid to CEO Martyn Starnes and President and Owner Wael Al-Qadi for embracing the right approach to running the club, and continuing to invest time and resources. Although their position in the table was for 2019/2020, anecdotally speaking it’s clear that the approach has continued during a very difficult period on the pitch in 2020/2021.


What is also clear from all those doing well in the Index, whether Rovers, Index winners Exeter City, FA Cup Winners Leicester City and others who do Engagement well, it’s about Fan Engagement as a good in itself, not simply to drive commercial income or to sell more tickets.
