This episode features Oliver Ash, co-owner of Maidstone United FC. He also co-owns Brive Rugby Union club in France, and lives just outside Paris.

I first met Oliver a few years ago, and I’ve always liked the way he makes Fan Engagement such a natural part of what he does. He takes the view that it’s good for business to be in tune with your most important group of stakeholders - and in the case of Maidstone United, those whose loyalty kept the club alive in its darkest days of park football.

We chatted about the reason he decided to help Maidstone build their new ground, what the challenges are for Fan Engagement in non-league football, and what the crossovers are with his Rugby Union interests.

Key Insights from Episode Eight

  1. Culture is fundamental: You can have all the structure and strategy you want, but if you don't think of fans in everything you do, then you're doing it wrong
  2. Fan Engagement doesn't vary between sports: Rugby Union clubs need Fan Engagement too
  3. Communication is key: whatever resources you've got, listening costs nothing - except time
