According to Ben Greenfield (you should check him out btw), the typical ancient athlete would train these systems:

1. V02 max; this is the maximum output of your heart. How hard does your heart have to pump the blood to the muscle under heavy workout? An example of such workout would be a 4 min of exercise followed by 4 minutes of rest. You would repeat these 4 or 5 times through and about 3 to 4 times a month.

2. Mitochondria training; short intense exercise followed with longer rest. An example would be a and exercise 30 sec hard and 2 min easy. You would repeat this up to 4 times.

3. Lactic acid tolerance; this would be a Tabata set. 20 sec hard and 10 sec easy repeated 8 times through.

4. Stamina; 40 min long walk in a fasted state

5. Muscle/Strength; lift heavy stuff 5x sets 5 rest. Repeat these 2 or 3 times a week, this is slower twitch muscle fiber approach. More explosive fast-twitch muscle fiber training would look like this; 30 sec effort followed by 15 sec rest. These are two kinds of muscles and both have their role in the body.

6. Mobility; do any kind of yoga or mobility at least 3 times a week.

‘It’s about patience and persistency, once a week through this training is enough, better do less, than too much and hurt yourself’. Coach Sommers
