Mr Adrian Byrne discusses the importance of discipline in Martial Arts training in order to progress towards your training goals.   Last night we had a discussion about what Discipline looks like in Taekwon-Do. Sometimes the perception is that discipline is standing in line and doing what you’re told, being a good robot! Actually, we feel it’s a much broader concept that is fundamental to achieving success in Taekwon-Do initially and has a much wider range of real life applications.   Our daily routines include turning up to class; prepared to train, properly dressed, with all our equipment, with tasks or chores completed (like homework), fuelled to train, well rested and focused on the task at hand.   In class we repeat key activities; line up, bow, warm up, stretch, practice fundamentals, touch gloves, thank our partners, tidy away our equipment, high 5 or clap at the end.   All of these are small things that are easy to do once but also easy to forget, leave out or ignore. Discipline is about doing things consistently well for a long period of time, even when; it’s hard, you don’t want to, other things are more interesting. Initially we build good habits around small things that are easily done, but when these are done consistently and we have a foundation that is solid we can build on these and aim for greater things.   Our students felt that discipline helps us be organised and calm, get more done and have better classes. Not a bad message.
