Mastering The Mental Side Of Competition & Training For Taekwon-Do Tournaments 


Richie Forde gives his insight into the mental side of Martial Arts training and performance from both an athlete and coaches perspective, interviewed by Sports Psychology student and former ITF England competitor Alex Cameron.  


Questions/Topics: 


1. What do you feel are the key changes an athlete needs to make in terms of mindset in order to go from non-elite to elite?  


2. Have you ever struggled to have a positive coach-athlete relationship, if so what were the key factors that caused the struggle?  


3. Have you found a theme of junior athletes becoming over-confident or experienced an increase in ignorance in the time frame around their first national team selection? a) What do/ would you do to combat this?  


4. What are the main reasons in your opinion that can make working with elite athletes more challenging than working with non-elite athletes?  


5. What do you expect from your elite students, both psychologically and physically, that you perhaps wouldn’t with your non-elite students?  


6. How do you build mental strength within your elite athletes and does this differ to your club-level students?  


7. Have you ever had an elite student come to you with chronic stressors or anxious thoughts, if so, how did you help to coach them through it? If not, how would you help an athlete in that situation?  


8. How do you help support athletes with severe injuries, what advice do you give the athlete?  


9. Do national team coaches get irritated with the set back of an athlete being injured in the months leading up to a big competition and why?  


10. Scenario q – You take your elite national team athlete to the World Cup and they had just won individual sparring in the recent European championships, At the World Cup they lose in the second round to a non-elite athlete (club level).  (a) How do you think the athlete would feel? (b) What would your thoughts and feelings be about the outcome? (c) How would you help your athlete through this?
